The Dive Bar: A Montreal Staple

Dive bars such as this lovely specimen on Parc Avenue have colourful pasts, but their futures, to an extent, depend on the government-sponsored video lottery terminals (VLTs) lurking in the corners. My dad picked up a beautiful old tavern table which had been relegated to a basement at his favourite watering hole to make way for VLTs in the 90s. He explained that tavern tables are the best because they have to be sturdy enough to withstand brawls and maladroit drunks. The old-school taverns he frequents have bright lights and zero women, despite flashing neon signs bearing their proud proclamations: “Bienvenue aux dames”.
